Industrial access safety and corrosion statistics.

Six current, citable data points for people writing, specifying or planning around industrial walkways, platforms and hard-working access areas.

Last updated: 4 November 2026

Access surfaces sit inside a wider safety and maintenance picture. These figures do not select a product or replace a site-specific assessment. They provide reliable context for the decisions around surface condition, traffic, support and corrosive exposure.

680,000

workers reported a non-fatal workplace injury

The Health and Safety Executive estimate is for Great Britain in 2024/25, based on Labour Force Survey self-reports.

30%

of employer-reported non-fatal injuries were same-level slips, trips or falls

This was the largest accident category in HSE's provisional RIDDOR figures for 2024/25.

35

workers died after a fall from height

Falls from height remained the leading kind of fatal injury to workers in Great Britain in 2024/25.

4.4m

working days were lost to non-fatal workplace injuries

£6.5bn

was the estimated cost of workplace injury

This is the HSE estimate for new workplace injury cases in Great Britain during 2023/24, including financial and human costs.

US$2.5tn

was the estimated global annual cost of corrosion

NACE International's IMPACT study put the figure at 3.4% of global GDP for 2013. It is a global estimate, not a UK figure or a GRP product claim.

Reading the figures properly

Useful context, not a shortcut.

Slip, trip and fall data helps explain why access routes deserve careful attention. Corrosion data shows why exposure and maintenance belong in the same early conversation. Neither turns a generic material claim into a specification.

For a GRP grating project, start with the clear span, support arrangement, intended traffic, wet or chemical exposure, cut-outs and edge conditions. Then compare the actual product information to the job in front of you.

Methodology and sources

How this reference is maintained.

This page uses figures published by the Health and Safety Executive for Great Britain and the NACE International IMPACT study for the global corrosion estimate. Every statistic links directly to its named source and carries the period or publication date used.

The page is reviewed monthly, or sooner when a core source publishes a material update. Stable section links are retained when figures are refreshed, so citations remain useful.
